Flame

We went hiking in the mountains recently, and there were all these flame azaleas around (great name, right?), and they were so gorgeous and the exact color of this shirt. Who doesn't like the color "flame"?

I wore this thrifted top on a nice evening walk with my family and then came home and drank all the tea because I am drinking all the tea right now. Hydration is happiness, people!

This picture makes me think of this time last year when I was all loose shirts, shorts and Birkenstocks, and I was so so so pregnant. Now my baby is almost 11 months. He's growing teeth, crawling like a pro and feeding himself little puffs. (It is hilarious. Half of them don't make it in his mouth. Sunshine Dog is loving life under the high chair these days.) We have two weeks until summer vacation, and then it's going to be mama and baby party time!

Mama in a maxi-dress mumu

Horizontal stripes. They're the new polka-dots. As in: I love, love, love them and wear them maybe too much. (Nope. Not too much. I take it back. No such thing.)

I bought this dress when I was pregnant, and it was awesome then, and it's awesome (just a lot longer) now. It is my current "maxi dress mumu." I always have one in rotation. I get home, take off the schoolmarm gear and throw on a maxi dress.

These are some eBay Danksos. I thought about buying new Danksos for one half of a second and then realized that they are too out-of-control expensive new. That's okay. These suit me just fine. I've been having a problem with my hip (What is happening?! I am 34 years old! I think it's a combo of getting a lot of exercise in not-great shoes and carrying around my precious baby boy.), and I've vowed to only wear really supportive shoes until it goes away.

That's right, America: I have hip problems. And I wear comfortable shoes. And I have big ol' glasses. And I regularly use archaic slang. (Example: This dress is the bee's knees!) So what? We can't all be spring chickens!

Thomas, Bob and me

It's not summer yet, but it's SO summer. My co-teacher and I hang out at recess discussing how much we're sweating and how we're oddly tanned/not tanned. (Arms: Very tan. Legs: Crazy pale cause I dress like a schoolmarm at work. Go figure.) It is summer, but it's not, but I am so so ready for it to become official.

The leaves in North Carolina are so lush right now. The weather is humid. Thomas is rocking his little sunhat. I'm rocking my Bob Dylan tank top (Love you Bob!), little black skirt and blue sneakers.

We've been spending a lot of time outside these days. Thomas loves to be outside. He's teething, which is not the easiest thing to do, and being outside always soothes him. Some day, that kid will be able to eat all the things! Right now, we're all about some cottage cheese and avocados and Greek yogurt and also general baby food.

Here's a great thing about kids: Everything (everything) is new to them. That's so exciting to me! Little things are new to him. (Cottage cheese!) Big things are new to him. (Our trip to California this summer!) And it makes all these things I'm so "been there done that" about (I'm looking at you cottage cheese and California) seem much more exciting.

Thanks for that, Thomas. And thanks for being so darn cute.

Style Icon: Betty Boop

Betty Boop, my favorite cartoon flapper. She has that perfect flapper look -- big eyes, bobbed hair and that small, heart-shaped mouth. Her, ahem, outfit leaves very little to the imagination and non-cartoon flappers probably wouldn't actually wear it (I mean they were known for short skirts, but not that short!).

Still, you gotta love silly, sultry Betty Boop!

Remix - Heart dress

Oh sweet, sweet heart dress, how I do heart you. What is not to love? You are flouncy and graphic and comfy and fun.

I wear a lot of dresses with cardigans. It's just what I do. It's my thang. And since my thang is wearing dresses with cardigans, I've combined this one with several. Then I add some boots. Or sandals. Or occasionally a cornfield. This dress looks really stellar when combined with a cornfield.

It is often my "date day" dress. When me and my husband go out to do something romantic, I like to wear it. It makes me feel pretty and attractive and, despite its flouncy sweetness, I think it's just a wee bit slinky too. Heck, I even felt like a babe when I wore it super pregnant (and when I was super pregnant, I did not always feel babe-like). This dress, I tell you what, it has some positive powers!

Celebration

Robert and I celebrated our fourth anniversary this weekend, and it was wonderful! I love this guy and our little, baby boy. Oh! And Mother's Day! That was pretty good too. Pancakes, people. Mother's Day means pancakes.

On not succeeding

Things don't always work out, you know? For example, last Sunday, we wanted to get our dog's nails clipped (a first-time thing, Sunshine has always had lots of long walks and naturally worn down her nails, but we've cut down on those walks since the little nugget arrived so...), get some burrito bowls and go hang out and eat at a local park with a fabulous lake.

We did not succeed in having the nails clipped (Rabies paperwork! Sure. It makes since we would need that!) or the burrito bowls (No silverware!) or the park (Sunshine Dog cannot contain herself around other dogs! No one wants to eat a burrito bowl with their fingers... except possibly Thomas, but he'd have issues with the textures...)

Anyway: My point is: Sometimes I have these really lovely, idyllic days of contented motherhood and other times, nothing goes right and my husband is all like "Let's go home" and I'm all like "Yeah, okay," but at least Thomas and I had a few minutes looking at ducks, and I finally got an outfit photo for my blog for the first time in, like, a month.

Silver linings. Here's a picture of my outfit. The skirt felt really short when I was wearing it, but looks really long in this picture. What's that about? Let us all ponder. Shoes and shirt are second-hand. Skirt is not. Thomas's onesie has a tie on it, which makes it pretty darn amazing. Lake background enjoyed for approximately eight minutes.

Style Icon: Greta Garbo

Greta Garbo is mostly about that Greta Garbo face and Great Garbo voice.

But she also looks pretty amazing in some Greta Garbo clothes. For example:

Greta Garbo pants.

Greta Garbo hats.

Greta Garbo gowns.

Oh the gowns!

Still nothing made of cloth can compete with that iconic Greta Garbo face! She is a legend for a reason. A very striking, individual, inimitable reason.
