Style Icon: Jane

Part of being a style icon is having a consistent style. In general, I don't really think of trend-followers as style icons. I think of people who have a distinctive, definitive style as being style icons.

And so, cartoons make really great style icons as they're basically always wearing the same thing and looking amazing doing it.

The biggest cartoon style icon of mine? Jane from Daria.

Jane was an artist. She had many ear piercings, bobbed hair and some serious red lipstick. She was so '90s cool. She was not part of the mainstream, but she wasn't quite so cranky and cynical as Daria.

Daria had her own '90s Velma thing going on that is admirable as well. Both ladies are sporting excellent books and sour expressions. Love those tights under shorts, Jane!

And while cartoon characters never change their looks, Jane did sometimes take off the jacket. Look how cool she is! I love her and her '90s beatnik style. No one, flesh and blood or drawn, did it better!

So funny. I loved this show. And Jane did have killer style. Her style reminds me of Martika's in the Toy Soldiers video. As for cartoons I can't think of one whose style I'd like to emulate but I can think of lots of fictional characters like Rayanne from My So-Called Life. She was definitely my style icon in the 90s and I do miss carrying around a million bags, wearing flannel with tights, and blackberry lipstick... ; }

Cool. I never thought of looking at cartoons for fashion ideas. Plus, although I've heard of this show, it was long after my time. I grew up wanting to be Wilma Flintstone. :)

Oh my goodness, Daria is hands down one of my favorite animated series. Personality wise, I'm more like Daria, I think, but LOVE Jane's style- the epitome of 90s cool.

There is one episode, called Life in the Past Lane, I think, that Jane goes vintage for a fella... she wore it well, too bad he was a jerk ;)

Great post!

Admission: I don't know these characters. But yes, both are definitely cool.

Haha! I loved this show and actually dressed up as Jane for a fancy dress party once. No one knew who I was, but I had fun. She was my favourite.
