Style Icon: Andy Warhol

Wig. Glasses. Sometimes no glasses. Black clothes. Ties. Someone glamorous by his side. This was Andy Warhol's signature style.

Edie Sedgwick is my favorite Andy Warhol arm candy. She really was pretty fabulous. Andy Warhol -- fabulous as well and also odd and socially awkward.

I am of the opinion that anything you call art is art. It might be really terrible art, but I'm not going to tell you it isn't art. (I will say it's bad art. Or boring art.) Everything Andy Warhol did? I think it's for sure art. Even that stack of tomato cans. It's all about context. It's all about branding and American consumerism.

And his look is minimalist and consistent. A part of me really admires this. A part of me wishes I just had an interesting haircut and wore minimalist clothes and that was my look. More of me, however, digs the Edie Sedgwick vibe. Maryjane shoes and a feathered coat? Yes please!

The World is a Stage

"They say the world is a stage. But obviously the play is unrehearsed and everybody is ad-libbing his lines." -- Calvin and Hobbes (Bill Watterson)

Style Icon: Joan Jett

Joan Jett -- loud, sweaty, rock-n-roll tomboy. Her style is rough and messy and there's nothing girly about it.

Well, okay, she always has really great makeup, which is kind of girly, but bold, black eyeliner it's also really tough and hard. That eye makeup shows she is not to be messed with.

Joan Jett was huge in the '80s ("I Love Rock and Roll" anyone?), and she's still awesome today. She wears a lot of black leather these days, and totally works that look the way she used to work a T-shirt, jeans and chucks. And the dark eye makeup? Yeah, that's been consistent since possibly birth. I could totally picture Baby Joan Jett with some kohl liner. Joan Jett: A lifetime of being a style icon.

Loving It

 Lately I've been loving...

1. My new purse (super orange!)

2. My baby sleeping on me

3. Thomas loving his great-grandma.

4. He also loves this toy so much, What do you call this thing? I got it for $10 at a consignment shop.

5. Best $10 I ever spent!

Polka dots always match polka dots

I start work today. My baby started going to daycare for a few hours a day two weeks ago so we could both get used to it. Thomas took to it just fine. I had a nervous breakdown. And I bought a polka-dot coat.

I did not need a coat, but I went stress-shopping at Target his first two-hour daycare stint, and I discovered this! And I was like: I am buying that to soothe myself. It worked for maybe five minutes, but the adorableness of the coat will last lots longer. This weekend, I wore it with polka dots because obviously. Thankfully, I am doing much better emotionally. Change is hard! I'm officially a working mom. So strange! Wish me luck!

Style Icon: Nina Simone

Nina Simone, the high priestess of soul, had mad style.

She was gorgeous in an evening gown and heels as seen above... BUT...

My favorite Nina Simone is louder, sassier, more colorful and more accessorized.

I also think old pictures of her look so modern. Look at that outfit! Wouldn't you just love to wear that outfit? It doesn't look dated at all to me. (Although that could just be me. I do enjoy wearing some dated-looking clothing.) Maxi dresses are still the best. Bold necklaces? Still the best. Nina Simone? The best.

Remix - Wide-leg jeans

My favorite jeans are my largest jeans. Sure, I own skinny jeans too and not-skinny-but-not-wide-leg-just-sort-of-in-the-middle jeans as well. But my favorite jeans? Yep. My wide-leg jeans.

I just feel so free in them, perhaps because of the lack of circulation restriction. I just feel so '70s and hip and relaxed. Plus they're great for dog walking!

And they're jeans -- America's number one neutral! They go with everything, and so I wear them with everything. It's almost like I'm being patriotic! God bless America, God bless wide-leg jeans.

Style Icon: Grace Coddington

If you have not already seen the documentary "The September Issue," I highly suggest you go watch it pronto. It's all about putting together a September issue of Vogue, and, for me, it's all about how fabulous Grace Coddington is.

Grace Coddington is the creative director of American Vogue, and she is a hoot to watch. She is so passionate about what she does and has such an excellent, romantic eye for editorials. She is Anna Wintour's right hand woman, and she's not afraid to stand up to her/complain about her, which I love.

She started out in the fashion business as a model.

She was, of course, fabulous as a model. That face!

But I love her modern-day look the best. Bright red, big hair. Pale skin. All black. Style icon, for sure.

Out of control

It's just a week and a half until I return to work, and that's definitely a good thing when it comes to my (bought-on-the-Internet) pocketbook.. because stay-at-home-mama's eBay addiction is out of control!

This coat. Oh, this coat. I read this article on xoJane, which featured an ornate Anthropologie coat and then shortly after saw this ornate Anthropologie coat listed on eBay, and I got all my precious about it and had to have it.

The embroidery is what it's all about. I wore it to go out to a girls dinner and eat pho. The last time I tried to go get Asian food with these ladies, I got into a car accident, got whiplash and then got a week-long, full-body rash from the prescription drugs I was given (all this with a tiny, infant at home). This time was much more fun and less eventful! I did think about the accident the whole drive there, though. It was only three months ago, hopefully it'll get out of my psyche soon.

Anyway, that's my thin, silver triangle necklace I did not buy on eBay and have had for a long time. Love it. I don't really love my glasses, but I went to the optometrist recently and have new ones coming eventually.

Mmkay... back to discussing how eBay is hurting my pocketbook... I got all hung up on the idea of getting a black kisslock pocketbook, and this is the one I finally found. I lurve it. Lurve it, I say! So, yes, mommy (speaking about myself in the third person, these things happen) is going back to work, and she's doing it in style!

Pretty Ladies

I'm a little late, but I wanted to share some awesome blog looks that inspired me in October! Here they are:

The blog Artfully Aware is all about art inspiring clothing, and the connection is always crazy spot on.

Buddle and Squeak is one of my new favorite blogs. I mean, just look at that pattern mixing!

With the tagline "Growing old disgracefully," the blog Pull Your Socks Up is always entertaining. And look at that purse! And that dress! And I love her hair too.

Laura really likes cat prints. Who can blame her? Cat prints are cute!

I really love the blog A Geek Tragedy due in large part to Abby's laid-back style. Look at Bambi!

Style Icon: Solange Knowles

I love all the things Solange Knowles wears. All the things.

She is just so adept at wearing prints and mixing patterns and looking fresh and different.

She's also all about bright colors and looking young and hip.

Between her and Beyonce, I'm always way more excited about what Solange is wearing. Beyonce is fun, but Solange always provides something unexpected.

And not to get all tabloid-y over here, but it was definitely unexpected when she went off on Jay-Z in the elevator. I was all like "WHAT?" and then I waited and waited for a clear explanation and one never came. I realize it's none of my business and no explanation is owed, but man I want to know the answer! Why did she go off on him? What a mystery! Anyway, elevator kerfuffle or not, I'm Team Solange all the way.
