Style Icon: Gloria Steinem

Here's the thing with Gloria Steinem: She was a feminist and she was hot. She had a giant brain, biting tongue and wore tiny miniskirts. She's still hot! And I'm feeling a little un-feminist myself writing about how hot Gloria Steinem was (is), but one of the really awesome things about her is she got rid of a certain idea of a stodgy, humorless feminist. She was very young, hip and with it when she came on the scene.

Not so very long ago, I made my living as a journalist and Gloria Steinem remains one of my major heroes. She's a great writer. She's funny and no-nonsense. She's the founder of "Ms." for goodness sakes!

When I think about the "style icon" side of Gloria Steinem I think of the '70s, I think of long hair and big glasses and that take-no-prisoners look on her face.

She was fabulous and smart and political then and she still is today!

As seen so clearly here.

I am soooooo happy that young girls like you actually still admire Gloria Steinem. I had the impression that a lot of girls just take women's rights for granted. BTW you have been looking particularly gorgeous yourself lately!

Hellz yeah! Unfortunately she wasn't as forward-thinking on race issues.... but people are products of their times, I guess. Anyway, I don't think I'd ever actually seen a picture of Gloria before. She reminds me of Joni Mitchell.

Greetings from an 18-year-old feminist who just stumbled upon your blog! I adore Gloria Steinem and I am always happy to see her acknowledged on the blogosphere. Congratulations on the pregnancy. :)
